Dordrecht harbour by moonlight. (After Aelbert Cuyp)

Dordrect harbour by moonlight after Aelbert Cuyp

Pastel on ClaireFontaine PastelMat Image size – 13.25″ x 9.25″

I painted this as an exercise to try and see how close to the original oil painting I could get using Pastel. The original is oil on board 76.5 x 106.5 cm painted circa 1643-45 and now hangs in the  Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne.

Copying an old master can be a frustrating  but rewarding experience and gives an insight into how the artist thought and what colours they used, I really enjoyed working on this particular painting and I am quite pleased with the result.

Aelbert Cuyp is one of my favourite painters, he was one of the Dutch masters born 1620 in Dordrecht and died there in 1691.
